But sometimes you, perhaps on a lecturer’s advice, may prefer to look at a specific resource such a named database, single publisher site or even a particular journal title. Consider using one or more news services to keep you up to date with the business world.

The following databases are suggested as good starting points for finding Project and Risk Management materials. This list is not exhaustive, and you may find other databases more suited to your needs.


Good place to search for articles from professional journals not found on Google Scholar as well as academic articles. Click on the peer-reviewed button if you only want academic articles.


The full-text of thousands of articles from more than 100 peer-reviewed journals published by Emerald. Subjects covered include health and safety, management, human resources, marketing and training – will often have engineering related articles as well.  Best results found if you do an advanced search this where you can choose to search for just case studies or literature reviews.


Engineering Village not in Discovery 

Abstracts from engineering sources not covered by the business databases. Enables you to see many conference papers.


OHSIS provides a wide range of full-text material from key publishing organisations covering legislation, guidance, standards and best practice in health, safety and environmental management.


In spite of its name, this database has thousands of articles on business and management topics

It covers all areas of project management from systems to human aspects; links theory with practice by publishing case studies and covering the latest important issues.

It aims to promote better risk management practices and to contribute to the development of risk management methodologies.


Project Management Journal is the academic and research journal of the Project Management Institute and features state-of-the-art research, techniques, theories, and applications in project management.


Published on behalf of the Society for Risk Analysis, this peer reviewed journal is committed to publishing critical empirical research and commentaries dealing with risk issues. The topics covered range from ecological risks through to risk perception, acceptability and ethics.


Publishes peer reviewed papers that address the range of traditional issues within risk and crisis management but also encourages multi-disciplinary perspectives on the ways in which these approaches are evolving in light of contemporary challenges.

The Economist not in Discovery 

Leading weekly magazine covering global political, economic and business news. Includes archive back to 1997. On Campus use only.


Access todays FT and the archive back to 2004. Find up to date business and commercial news, global financial markets, company and industrial sector information. Explore data on companies. markets and investments including charts and research tools.

Nexis not in Discovery 

Full text articles from many news sources and trade journals both UK and international. Archives sometimes stretching back to the late 1990s.

Look for the sections starting with these numbers. The shelf end guide cards will help you find various aspects of the subject. Remember the Discovery tool/catalogue will help you locate useful e-material.
