Sometimes you may want to try specific databases or journals – perhaps your lecturer has recommended particular names as a good way of finding articles. This page lists key sources for Sports Development :

Google Scholar not in Discovery 

Google scholar is a variant of Google which searches for academic material including articles, books, conference papers and preprints. A guide to this resource can be found at http://www.lib-guides.port.ac.uk/LG178.pdf

A multi-disciplinary, full text, journal archive containing thousands of articles

• 

PsycArticles is a definitive source of full-text, peer-reviewed scholarly and scientific articles in psychology. It contains articles from nearly 80 journals published by the American Psychological Association and others. Coverage spans 1894 to the present. This database is available on the EBSCO platform allowing you to search this database alongside others within Discovery.

PsycINFO is a bibliographic database covering the research literature in the psychological, social, behavioural, and health sciences. It includes material of relevance to psychologists and professionals in related fields such as psychiatry, management, business, education, social science, neuroscience, law, medicine, and social work

• 

ScienceDirect's extensive and unique full text database covers authoritative titles from the core scientific literature, published by Elsevier. More than 2,500 journals and more than nine million full-text articles are available in ScienceDirect providing access to the physical sciences and engineering life sciences. This resource is also available through the Discovery service.

Scopus not in Discovery 

Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature: scientific journals, books and conference proceedings. Delivering a comprehensive overview of the world's research output in the fields of science, technology, medicine, social sciences, and arts and humanities. Scopus features smart tools to track, analyze and visualize research.

SPORTDiscus is a bibliographic database covering all aspects of sport and sport development. . This database is available on the EBSCO platform allowing you to search this database alongside others within Discovery.

Web of Science – part of the Web of Knowledge collection of databases – consists of a number of databases containing information gathered from thousands of scholarly journals, books, book series, reports and conferences. Three citation databases (Science Citation Index Expanded (1970-), Social Sciences Citation Index and Arts (1975-) and Humanities Citation Index (1975-)) also contain the references cited by the authors of the articles. You can use these references to do cited reference searching, allowing you to find articles that cite a previously published work. Conference Proceedings Citation Index – Science includes the published literature of the most significant conferences, symposia, seminars, colloquia, workshops, and conventions in a wide range of scientific disciplines.

ZETOC not in Discovery 

Zetoc is a database of the tables of contents from journals held by the British Library. It has a search function or you can select any journal held by the BL and have the table of contents emailed to you as soon as a new issue is published.

The journal of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Leisure Studies Annals is aimed at an international readership and includes articles which cover any topic within the broad area of leisure studies, including recreation, tourism, hospitality, the arts, outdoor recreation, events, entertainment, sport, culture and play.

A multi-disciplinary journal covering all aspect of body-studies. Print also available

• 

European Physical Education Review covers the broad field of physical education, including sport and leisure issues and research. It includes contributions from the natural and social sciences and humanities

• 

The European Sport Management Quarterly publishes articles that contribute to the understanding of how sport organizations are structured, managed and operated. Founded by the European Association for Sport Management, the journal sets out to enhance understanding of the role of sport management and sport bodies in social life and the way social, political and economic forces and practices affect these organizations

• 

The International Journal of Sports Science and Coaching is a peer-reviewed, international, academic/professional journal, which aims to bridge the gap between coaching and sports science.  It publishes original papers representing a variety of qualitative and quantitative research methods plus case studies of work between sports scientists and coaches.

The International Journal of the History of Sport provides global coverage of the subject. As well as regular issues, it also offers regionally-focused issues on the Americas, Africa, Asia, Australasia and the Pacific, Europe, and the Middle East. Additionally there are special issues each year on topics and themes of international significance.

The International Review for the Sociology of Sport contains research articles, reports, commentaries and book and media reviews.  It brings together contributions to the study of sport from the fields of anthropology, cultural studies, geography, gender studies, media studies, history, political economy, semiotics and sociology.

Journal of Sport and Social Issues covers the latest research, discussion and analysis on contemporary sport issues from an international, interdisciplinary perspective. Print also available

The Journal of Sport and Tourism is a multidisciplinary publication featuring articles on all aspects of the relationship between sport and tourism. Subject areas include sport, leisure, physical education and tourism, with perspectives from a wide range of disciplines including sociology, psychology, geography, policy studies, management studies, economics and marketing

• 

The Journal of Sport Behavior publishes original, empirical, investigative and theoretical papers dealing with the studies of behaviour in the areas of game and sport.  It is multidisciplinary covering sociology, psychology and anthropology and related applications to the science of sport.  Available in print only.

The aim of the Journal of Sports Economics is to further research in the area of sports economics by bringing together theoretical and empirical research

The Journal of Sport Management covers a variety of areas associated with the management, governance, and consumption of sport such as: organizational theory, behaviour, and strategy; sport operations; law and policy; economics, finance, and accounting; marketing, consumer behaviour, sponsorship, advertising, and licensing; media, communications, and public relations; sport tourism; facility and event management; and gender and diversity. Leisure Sciences presents scientific inquiries into the study of leisure, recreation, parks, travel, and tourism from a social science perspective. Articles cover the social and psychological aspects of leisure, planning for leisure environments, leisure gerontology, travel and tourism behaviour, leisure economics, and urban leisure delivery systems. Leisure Studies is the journal of the Leisure Studies Association. It contains articles on all aspects of leisure studies and from a variety of disciplinary bases, including sociology, psychology, human geography, planning, and economics. Shorter research notes and book reviews are also published. The emphasis of the Journal is on the social sciences, broadly defined, and the subjects covered include the whole range of leisure behaviour in the arts, sports, cultural and informal activities, tourism, urban and rural recreation

A journal covering event, facility and visitor management in sport and tourism from a wide range of disciplinary approaches including finance, marketing, economics, law, planning, policy, research, geography, sociology, psychology and environmental studies

Physical Culture and Sport Studies and Research is an international journal of interest to students researching the social sciences of sport (philosophy, sociology, psychology, pedagogy, management of sport)

• 

Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy is the official research journal of the Association for Physical Education. It publishes research that reports educational practices in a variety of contexts, in particular school physical education, club sport, and active leisure programs

• 

Soccer and Society is an international journal devoted to the world’s most popular game. It covers all aspects of soccer globally from anthropological, cultural, economic, historical, political and sociological perspectives

• 

Social Psychology Quarterly publishes theoretical and empirical papers on the link between the individual and society.  It includes studies on the relations of individuals to one another as well as to groups and institutions. 

• 

The purpose of the Sociology of Sport Journal is to stimulate and communicate research, critical thought, and theory development on issues pertaining to the sociology of sport. The journal publishes empirical, theoretical, and position papers; book reviews; and critical essays. On campus use only (electronic) – print also available.

Sport, Education and Society is an international journal which publishes social science research on pedagogy, policy and the body in society and the wide range of associated social, cultural, political and ethical issues in physical activity, sport and health. It explores the forms, contents and contexts of physical education, sport and health education found in schools, colleges and other sites of formal education, and on the pedagogies of play, callisthenics, gymnastics, sport and leisure found in familial contexts, various sports clubs, the leisure industry, private fitness and health studios, dance schools and rehabilitation centres.

Sport in History is a history journal that publishes original, archivally-based research on the history of sport, leisure and recreation. It includes an extensive reviews section, an annual compendium of sports-related accessions to British archives and a 'Sport in Public History' section dealing with issues of sports-related heritage and memory in society.

Sport in Society is a multi-disciplinary journal which explores the relationships between sport and a diverse range of subjects including business, economics, law, management, politics, and media and tourism studies.

• 

Sport Management Review is a multi-disciplinary journal concerned with the management, marketing and governance of sport at all levels and in all its manifestations – whether as an entertainment, a recreation or an occupation.

Sports Development is a widely-distributed subject, and will be found under various classmarks on the First Floor. Remember that you must use the Library Catalogue to find the books you want rather than just browsing the shelves.
