For some assignments, our Discovery Service will give you enough sources to work with.

Sometimes you may want to try specific databases or journals – perhaps your lecturer has recommended particular names as a good way of finding articles. This page lists key sources for Geography:

Engineering Village not in Discovery 

Engineering Village consists of three bibliographic databases, GEOBASE, GeoRef and Compendex. GEOBASE is a multidisciplinary database of bibliographic information and abstracts that indexes journal literature across the earth sciences including geology, human and physical geography, environmental sciences, oceanography and geomechanics from 1980-present. GeoRef ccovers geological literature from North America (1785-present), plus  geological literature from the rest of the world (1933-present).

Compendex is the most comprehensive bibliographic database of scientific and technical engineering and computing research available. This may be of use to GIS students.

Full text for more than 190 journals and records for numerous other journal titles going back as far as 1888. This database is available on the EBSCO platform allowing you to search this database alongside others within Discovery.

Geofacets not in Discovery 

Geofacets provides access to hundreds of thousands of geologic maps from a wide range of trusted publications. It covers a wide spectrum of geologic disciplines including areas such as Paleogeography, Oceanography, Hydrology, Meteorology and Pedology. An online user guide is available.

Google Scholar not in Discovery 

Google scholar is a variant of Google which searches for academic material including articles, books, conference papers and preprints. A guide to this resource can be found at http://www.lib-guides.port.ac.uk/LG178.pdf

GreenFILE covers research information on all aspects of human impact to the environment. Its collection of scholarly, government and general-interest titles includes content on the environmental effects of individuals, corporations and local/national governments, and what can be done at each level to minimize these effects. This is a multidisciplinary resource and topics include global climate change, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more. This resource is also available through the Discovery service.

This resource is an interdisciplinary module of regularly updated, peer reviewed ‘featured articles’ written by individuals or groups of experts in a particular field. The range of subject areas include Atmospheric Sciences, Bioscience, Energy and Natural Resources, Geoscience, Global Change, Hydrology and Oceanography. This contains Treatise of Geomorphology, Geophysics and Geochemistry.

ScienceDirect's extensive and unique full text database covers authoritative titles from the core scientific literature, published by Elsevier. More than 2,500 journals and more than nine million full-text articles are available in ScienceDirect providing access to the physical sciences and engineering life sciences. This resource is also available through the Discovery service.

Scopus not in Discovery 

Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature: scientific journals, books and conference proceedings. Delivering a comprehensive overview of the world's research output in the fields of science, technology, medicine, social sciences, and arts and humanities. Scopus features smart tools to track, analyze and visualize research.

Web of Science – part of the Web of Knowledge collection of databases – consists of a number of databases containing information gathered from thousands of scholarly journals, books, book series, reports and conferences. Three citation databases (Science Citation Index Expanded (1970-), Social Sciences Citation Index and Arts (1975-) and Humanities Citation Index (1975-)) also contain the references cited by the authors of the articles. You can use these references to do cited reference searching, allowing you to find articles that cite a previously published work. Conference Proceedings Citation Index – Science includes the published literature of the most significant conferences, symposia, seminars, colloquia, workshops, and conventions in a wide range of scientific disciplines.

Area publishes ground breaking geographical research and scholarship across the field of geography.

• 

A peer reviewed journal containing authoritative articles and international papers covering cartography, the science and technology of presenting, communicating and analysing spatial relationships by means of maps and other geographical representations of the Earth's surface.

This journal explores the technical, applied ecological, legal, political, social, and policy issues relating to the use of coastal and ocean resources and environments on a global scale.

• 

An interdisciplinary international journal concerned with the interactions between surface processes and landforms and landscapes.

• 

Journals covering urban and regional research, planning and design and government and policy.

• 

The Geographical Journal is the academic journal of the Royal Geographical Society.

• 

This journal covers the full spectrum of the discipline from fundamental theory and science to applied research of relevance to sustainable management of the environment.

• 

This is a monthly journal dedicated to publishing the most significant and cutting-edge research on the science of climate change, its impacts and wider implications for the economy, society and policy.

• 

A multi-disciplinary journal that aims to bring together top-quality research across the entire spectrum of the Earth Sciences. It encompasses modelling, fieldwork and theoretical studies.

• 

Transactions publishes a wide range of research across the subject area.

• 

An inter-disciplinary journal in its appreciation of cities.

Geography books can be found on the First Floor of the Library. Remember that you must use the Library Catalogue to find the books you want rather than just browsing the shelves.
