French, German, Italian & Spanish - Finding Articles

For some assignments, our Discovery Service will give you enough sources to work with.

Sometimes you may want to try specific databases or journals – perhaps your lecturer has recommended particular names as a good way of finding articles. This page lists key sources for French, German, Italian and Spanish Studies, plus Combined Modern Languages and some aspects of Applied Languages:

CAIRN lets you browse or search recent issues of journals written in French covering history, politics/IR, economics and contemporary society. Journals on CAIRN go back to about 2002 so if you want anything earlier or need other French journals use Persée.

• 

A journal archive containing thousands of articles relevant to many aspects of French, German, Italian and Spanish Studies.

• 

The French equivalent of JSTOR providing thousands of articles in French on humanities and social science topics. 'Revues scientifiques' is the French term for academic journals - just click that link if you want an alphabetical list of the journals available.

• 

The Spanish equivalent of JSTOR covering over 2000 Humanities and Social Science journals published in Spain

• 

A list of free e-journals compiled by the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin – useful if you want articles in German.

Try these especially for dissertation work

• 

A database of articles about Latin America which have appeared in the Spanish press from 1993 onwards. El País, ABC and El Mundo are the main papers covered.

• 

Articles published in a wide range of mostly Spanish journals. Most articles date from 1997 onwards, although some coverage is from 1940.

• 

Search lots of German and Austrian Library catalogues in one go. This site also gives access to Italian libraries.

Search all Spanish University Library catalogues in one go.

• 

Search all French University Library catalogues in one go.

A peer-reviewed journal covering German and East European history, politics and current affairs

• 

A good source of peer-reviewed articles covering all aspects of history across Europe from the later Middle Ages right up to the end of the twentieth century.

One of the most authoritative, peer-reviewed journals covering political and social issues in Western Europe. It always provides excellent coverage of all national elections in Western Europe.

German weekly with articles accessible from 1946 onwards

• 

This archive gives you highly respected commentary and analysis of global news each week from 1843 to 2012. The articles are full facsimiles, including photos and charts.

• 

Access stories and photos from The Guardian (1821-2003) and The Observer (1791-2003)

• 

L'Humanité 1904-1944 not in Discovery 

Archives of the French newspaper which was socialist up to 1920, then became communist

Archives of regional French newspapers from the early twentieth century.

Nexis not in Discovery 

Regional and national newspapers from the UK, Europe, the USA and Australasia, dating from the 1980s onwards. Nexis also contains the text of articles from European weekly news magazines e.g. L’Express, Le Point, Der Spiegel

Onlinenewspapers.com not in Discovery 

A great way to access lots of current newspapers for the language you are studying

• 

Search across 200 years of articles. Articles are full facsimiles of what was published on the day and you can view the article in its original page location if you want.
